It’s been nearly two decades since I stepped foot in a college classroom – which feels both impossible and, honestly, a little rude to type out. But I don’t think I’ll ever stop being a student. Maybe not in the traditional sense (no exams, thank you!), but definitely a student of life: always observing, learning, evolving, and occasionally getting schooled by the universe.
Every fall, NYC starts buzzing with the arrival of new college students, and living in the East Village means I’m truly in the THRONGS of dorm culture. Fresh faces, overstuffed moving carts, tiny-room Target hauls, and friend groups that look like they met approximately 20 minutes ago… it’s all happening right outside my door. In a weird way, the energy keeps me young—or at least makes me briefly forget that I could technically be some of these students’ professor.
Naturally, the back-to-school mood made its way into the outfit. Rugby shirts will always feel like a school uniform to me, and I don’t hate it… I mean, I look good in them, so what can I say? Paired with a few prep-school-inspired pieces like these striped pants from Urban Outfitters, the whole look feels like an East Village take on campus style: slightly polished, a little playful, and ready for class.
Am I actually heading back to school? Absolutely not, thank the heavens. But am I committed to lifelong learning and dressing like I might have a seminar at noon? You bet your butt I am.
