It’s late afternoon and the sun is finally out. We’ve spent the day wandering the 1st Arrondissement with little to no agenda – no itinerary to follow. As we cross the bridge, I spot a graffiti artist steady at work in the walkway below. I descend the stairs hoping to catch a few quick snaps of his work in progress but I’m too late – he’s moved on to his next target. I decide a quick stroll along the Seine’s left bank would be nice since I’m already down there.

What a visceral experience it is to roam ground that was first built upon by the Romans in the 1st century BC. The 5th Arrondissement is actually the oldest of them all and it has no shame in reminding you of that with every step… weathered stone walls and ancient anchor pulls stand at attention waiting to mesmerize pedestrians like a siren to the sea. If you get a chance, take this walk – you certainly won’t regret it.
