As a kid, I was fascinated with the unexplainable. Conspiracy theories, UFO sightings, and unsolved crimes were among topics I often explored, but none of these were more beguiling than the stories surrounding the island of Bermuda. The Bermuda Triangle, or Devilās Triangle as some call it, is a region in the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have mysteriously disappeared ā either by paranormal or extraterrestrial means, of course.
No one can fully confirm or deny the existence of unexplainable happenings ā yet itās the mysteries of Bermuda that prompted my first visit to the island last summer and itās my curiosity that continues to make Bermuda a destination I continue to visit. While I can whet my curiosity with underwater shipwrecks and historical reenactments, the mysteries I encounter now are bit more soluble, albeit still as fascinating, like āwhich of the 181 Bermudan islands should I visit this afternoon?ā or āshould we go shopping in Hamilton or take flyboarding lessons instead?ā
Sounds too good to be true, doesnāt it? Well itās not!
Dreaming about a much deserved getaway? Bermuda is 21 square miles of paradise with a work-hard-play-hard mentality just waiting to be discovered. Skip those horrible, long traffic jams to the Hamptons or the packed trains down to Cape Cod ā because Bermuda is a short two- or three-hour flight from almost every major East Coast city (only 90-minutes from New York City, yāall!).
Not convinced yet? Readers of CondĆ© Nast Traveler have voted Bermuda the best island in the Caribbean 18 times since 1994. Considering Bermuda is actually in the Atlantic and not the Caribbean, Iād say thatās a lot of praise!
Hills and valleys and coves and quarries house homes exploding with color.Ā Deep reds, minty greens, and sky blues sit side-by-side in uninterrupted harmony. The hotels are absolutely magical ā colorful interiors and ornate decor offer a cheeky, but timeless ambience, making it the perfect setting for a quick weekend away. Between dinners at hot spots like Princess Fairmont’sĀ 1609 RestaurantĀ or Mickey’s Beach Bistro at the Elbow Beach Resort, explore the island and take in some sun on the beautiful private beaches just steps from vintage-inspired cocktail bars.
IfĀ Bermuda Ā isn’t currently on your bucket list, it’s about time you added it. The island is an absolute must-see ā and, again, itās only a short 90-minute flight from New York City. So cāmon embrace the island life and <Bermuda . Your biggest problem will be saying goodbye.Ā On my last trip, I kept wishing thatĀ the mystery and magic of the island would keep meĀ stranded. EvenĀ weeks later, the beauty of the island had me holding on to that wish.
