If you’d asked me to describe my style 15 years ago, “grunge” and “eclectic” would’ve been the last words I’d choose. Yet here I am today, with those exact words in my top 5. That’s the magic of the East Village – it has a way of pulling you into its beautiful chaos. This iconic NYC neighborhood, which has served as the city’s counterculture headquarters for over 60 years, has been my home base since 2013.
The East Village birthed punk rock, housed CBGB, and was home to one of my all-time favorites: Jean-Michel Basquiat. While rent prices have skyrocketed (read: criminally expensive) since its early days, the creative energy still radiates off every graffiti-covered wall.
That energy has transformed me in countless ways over the last decade, especially in how my style has evolved. This fit is what you’ll find me in on most “off” days – the kind of comfy-yet-confident pairing that I can’t get enough of. RIP to 2010’s Justin who loved skinny jeans and crisp polos (henceforth known as my “Tragic Era”).
The Yeezy Season 6 jacket was a whim purchase years ago after spotting it on a friend. Something about the oversized faded denim and contrast corduroy collar had me hooked. And these super wide-leg Zara jeans give me all the nostalgia of wearing JNCO jeans as a tween.
What the East Village has taught me most is that style isn’t about following rules – it’s about breaking them with confidence. This neighborhood evolved from a gritty artist haven into a hip foodie paradise but never lost its edge, proving that sometimes the best transformations come from mixing unexpected elements.
So shoutout to the East Village, this kooky little slice of New York City where punk rock ghosts and eccentric stoners mingle. My happy place, MY neighborhood… thanks for the inspo! Now, pardon me, I have a spicy margarita or two waiting for me at Empellon. xx Justin
