Matt Bernson – 20 Harrison Street, NYC
I should start by saying, I’ve been a fan of Matt Bernson‘s women’s collection for some time now. He has this unique bohemian vibe that is easily recognizable in the curve of each heel or the weft in his exotic textiles. When he asked me to stop by his newly-opened TriBeCa store, I jumped on the chance. Nestled in a quiet block on Harrison Street near Greenwich, the store is open and luminescent, much like the designer. Bernson’s pieces are stacked orderly against the wall as if under the command of a cobbler general while large mirrors and wooden accent tables pepper the interior. Being the mercenary he is, Bernson also carries a variety of non-footwear items like accessories from independent artists and superstars like Dannijo (a footwear collaboration is launching this season).
I was able to preview his newest capsule collection of men’s shoes – and I must admit, I was skeptical. How could he translate his ethereal feminine pieces into something masculine and wearable? Instead, the three-piece collection blew my mind in its simple perfection and crisp luxury. Laced oxfords, perforated smoking sandals and sleek leather slippers hinted at ikat patterns hidden within. I snagged a pair of the cognac perforated sandals and haven’t taken them off since. Be sure to check out Matt’s store (20 Harrison Street, NYC) or buy online here.
